The Growth and Progress of Kids of Faith

November 20, 2009

When Kylie, the editor of KOF, started her online magazine she had no idea how far it would take her. If you had told her that in three years, it would have five contributing writers, its own domain name, and an affiliate outreach, she would have laughed in your face. After all, how could she, just a young girl who happened to love the Lord, start something like that? Read on to hear the story.

Kids of Faith was started in November of 2007 as an online newsletter.

“I was looking for a way to express my creativity in the computer realm while still making an impact for Christ. I had the idea to start an online newsletter, the purpose being to encourage kids in their walk with God while relating with them in a fun way.” ~ Kylie

Kylie’s friends were asked to send her any of their creative writings, or drawings they would like to share. I didn’t know Kylie that well at that point so when I got the e-mail I thought she was weird and ignored it. I’m serious. After all, there were tons of things like that, and I was way too busy to bother sending anything in.

I continued to get the Kids of Faith newsletter, and most the time I just glanced over the articles. I was startled to one day get an e-mail saying the newsletter had changed to an online magazine.

I was still unimpressed and didn’t pay much attention. Kylie and I started to chat with each other online, and we became good friends. I still didn’t read the site. Then one day she excitedly told me Kids of Faith now had its own domain name. Brain glitch, what was Kids of Faith again? When she sent me the link I was astonished. This was that annoying newsletter that had been cluttering up my inbox?

Kylie asked Catey if she would like to be a contributing writer for KOF, and not long after that Ashley and I jumped on board. Kids of Faith just started growing and growing and we were all surprised at how many articles have been in each issue. In Jan. of 2009 our very own Jocelberry signed up, and Alyssa started this last May, making up the five contributing writers and a new associate editor – Catey. As well as our senior editor of course, Kylie.

Summer of 2009 Kylie had the idea to challenge her readers to get closer to God in an outreach she called Ignition. This happened over a period of four weeks, each week daring the reader to do something more. The challenges included prayer, worship, digging into the Word, and reflecting on the promises of God.

As more and more ideas for Ignition came pouring in Kylie realized it would be a good idea to start a website just for the purpose of Ignition.

On June first the challenge began and at first the crew was disappointed. There didn’t seem to be many people doing it, and they thought all their work would be for nothing. They stuck it out though and by the end of the month their views had changed. Each of the writers had gone through the challenge as well and although it didn’t seem to reach out to as many people as hoped, it had reached out to us.

Kylie plans to do Ignition again next year, probably with some newer challenges and thoughts. Even though the challenge is over for this year, the Ignition blog is still being updated with posts to encourage us in our walk with God.

This issue is the three year anniversary of Kids of Faith, it has now had 3,900 visitors, and the number rises with each issue. Some exciting changes have come to Kids of Faith. We sometime joke about it someday being a real magazine, but you never know. Maybe, someday, it will.

Thanks to all the contributors (and special friends) who have joined Kylie in this endeavor. It has been so neat to see it grow and thrive! You are all such a huge blessing to her (and me). I am so grateful for what God is doing through your hearts for Him.
