The KOF Bulletin Board, July 2010

The KOF Bulletin Board

Hello everyone! I pray that you are having a blessed summer and enjoying the Son! ;)

We contributors have been very busy this season, and one of the things we’ve been working on is our summer edition of KOF. We’re excited to bring you several new articles, all focused around serving Jesus and focusing on loving Him, even in the busyness of life.

I’m pleased to announce that we have an addition to our team. Her name is Charity, and I’m looking forward to having her write for us. She will be writing our newest devotional column, No Greater Love. I took some time to ask her a few questions, so check out the interview (or her bio on this page) to learn more about her!

Some of you may remember our guest writer, Hannah Grace. She wrote the Story of the Month for last issue, and she’s back again this time around with a very unique short story called Save Her Heart. I would highly recommend reading it.

As far as entertainment goes, I’m sure many of you would be interested in reading the media-themed articles this issue. Bluejane’s movie review is all about the new Alice in Wonderland movie, sharing her thoughts on the film. Ashley has also reviewed two of her favorite songs in Music of my Heart, and in her latest edition of Shining Stars, she highlighted a great Christian band called Stellar Kart. These articles are written especially for those of you who are looking for new movies or music to enjoy this summer.

Catey was a guest-writer for Alyssa’s poetry column this issue, so be sure to read her poem, Mother Sings. Jocelberry has also submitted a wonderful photograph in her Artistic Expressions column.

And last, but not least, we have three devotionals this issue. Catey is writing about growing in God during your summer training, Charity talks about agape love, and I wrote about how love wins. Wherever you’re at spiritually, we pray God uses these to speak into your life.

Thanks for checking out our summer issue! We’d love to hear your thoughts. I pray you have a safe, fun summer.

Until next time,

Reflections: Love Wins

Love wins.

It started with a bumper sticker. Well, scratch that. It started with Chipotle.

My family had just gotten done eating at Chipotle, one of the best restaurants ever. As we walked to the parking lot, I was pulled out of my thoughts by the sight of a Volkswagen bug. (Leave it to lime green to grab your attention.) On the back was a small black bumper sticker. Printed in bold white letters were two words: LOVE WINS.

As I walked to my family’s car, I was struck with the meaning of these words. At first it doesn’t seem very profound. But if God is love…God wins!

As I write this, my family is on the highway caught in traffic. There’s an accident up ahead, and we were just passed by an ambulance. The sadness of this world never seems to end. We are constantly caught in the shadows. And the only thing that can dispel these shadows is love….because love wins.

Love never fails. God is love, and He will never disappoint. He’ll never let go. The lyrics coming through my headphones are no coincidence.

You Never Let Go

By Matt & Beth Redman

Even though I walk
Through the valley of the shadow of death,
Your perfect love is casting out fear.
And even when I’m caught
In the middle of the storms of this life,
I won’t turn back, I know You are near.

And I will fear no evil,
For my God is with me.
And if my God is with me,
Whom then shall I fear?
Whom then shall I fear?

Oh no, You never let go,
Through the calm and through the storm
Oh no, You never let go,
In every high and every low
Oh no, You never let go
Lord, You never let go of me.

And I can see a light
That is coming for the heart that holds on
A glorious light beyond all compare.
And there will be an end
To these troubles, But until that day comes,
We’ll live to know You here on the earth.

Yes, I can see a light that is coming
For the heart that holds on,
And there will be an end to these troubles,
But until that day comes,
Still I will praise You,
Still I will praise You.

Things will seem dark. Hope will seem distant. Love will seem to have failed. But it has not failed. It never will.

There will always be a way out. There will always be a light. Jesus has already conquered our greatest enemy – death. And Satan has no hold on us whatsoever. His end will be grim. He will perish, burning in the fire of his own evilness. He will not win.

God will. And I believe He already has. Love won on the cross, so many years ago. He won the battle – then and now. Love already conquered, so why should we fear? Perfect love casts out fear. And Love fights for you every single day in a constant battle – the one for your soul.

Satan still thinks he can win. But he won’t. God will wipe him out. Until that day, we will continue to be caught between the darkness and the light. Are you on God’s side?

Jesus loves you so much. He died for you. He conquered death. Love has won. Love wins. Has He won your heart? Completely?

Kylie would like to think she’s absolutely wonderful and perfect and amazing… but the truth is, she is nothing without Jesus. She isn’t perfect, and she will never be, yet she is content. She’s completely in love with Him and His love has shown her that it’s not who we are, it’s who He is. She hopes that her writing is evidence of God’s glory and a testimony to the love and grace He has shown to all of us. She enjoys writing, playing her guitar, daydreaming, and attempting to be funny.

Growing in God: Summer Training

Summer Training

-

School is coming to a close. You may be looking forward to a summer break to relax, going to summer camp or on a missions trip, or just hanging out.

I always feel most involved with God during the summer. There are fewer distractions – fewer deadlines to meet, less work to do.

Paul likens our Christian life like a runner’s training. We can’t always be racing. We have to have breaks between runs, times to cool down. We also need times to prepare, to get fit, to stretch and warm up. That helps us get ready when the big race comes and we’re running.

I consider summer break our training period. I use it to catch up on spiritual and material things.

This summer, I’ll be doing a lot of preparation and cooling down from the last school year. I’ll be taking courses over the summer to get ready for a few things I’m picking up this next school year. I’ll be using that time to catch up on my apologetics reading. I’ll be working on cementing doctrine into my mind and studying up on topics that will make an influence in the coming year.

I wasn’t especially thrilled about not having a full summer break when I first saw how necessary it would be. After all, this was a tough school year. There were far too many nights where I didn’t go to sleep until morning just to try to get assignments done. But God has really impressed upon me this verse in recent times:

2 Timothy 3:16-17: Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

God has a life prepared for all of us, and to be able to best carry out His plan, we need to be complete. That means we don’t get to slack off three months of the year, but that God wants to use us all the time, helping us grow in him. This verse also says that the word of God is able to get us ready to live that life after God’s will.

I’m convinced the reason God gives us rests in our Christian life is to prepare us for the next season in our lives. So let’s use this summer break to prepare for the life ahead of us. Make it meaningful. Get in God’s word and pray daily. Use this time to do things to make a difference.

Make this summer one to remember.

Catey is a hopeless romantic – at least as it comes to her love for her Savior! She loves all things communication-related, especially writing and speaking. A veritable expert in all things grammar and lover of words longer than three syllables, she prays that God will accomplish his plan in her writings, and that one day, she’ll get to learn to swing dance. Movie Review: Alice in Wonderland

Alice in Wonderland

The common fairy tale taken to a different dimension
Director: Tim Burton
Rated: PG
Length: 108 min.

Alice in Wonderland. The story was first told on paper by Lewis
Carroll in 1865. In 1951 Disney transformed the story into an animated children’s movie. This is the story most of us are familiar with. Many of us grew up watching it, but the story doesn’t end there.

On March 5th, 2010 a new adaptation of the tale was released to the theaters. Directed by Tim Burton and with the popular Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, this movie is certainly a one of a kind retelling.

I was unsure about watching this movie. I am not a Tim Burton fan, and was afraid he would somehow take the fun, dreamy story of Alice’ adventures and transform it into some kind of children’s horror.

I was wrong however. Although darker then most children’s movies, and having that distinct Tim Burton feel, the film was amazing.

Johnny Depp did not disappoint, keeping his aura of strangeness an making the character his own.
He wasn’t the only actor excellent actor in the movie though. Helena Bonham Carter almost made the Red Queen likable, and Mia Wasikowska cannot go unmentioned as Alice. Some other notable acting came from Anne Hathaway, Matt Lucas, and Alan Rickman.

Although I found the movie highly enjoyable there were a few things the could have done without, or done a better job with. For instance tying Alice’s past in with the story being told now, and entwined unnecessary love interests.

In the end however I would easily recommend Alice in Wonderland.

A misplaced Oregonian living in Kentucky. Bluejane loves horses, books, movies, the color green, history, and being homeschooled, but most of all she loves the Lord.

Story of the Month: Save Her Heart

“Hear ye, hear ye! The good King Leonard is offering a suitable reward for any person, man or woman, lad or lass, who can help him save his daughter, the royal Princess Mary.” So stated the young boy, standing on a crate in the middle of the town square, reading from a parchment scroll. Young Jerod stood in the crowd, listening to the announcement. His blue eyes showed interest, and he thoughtfully ran a calloused hand through his dark blond hair as the boy rolled up the scroll and walked off.

Jerod started back towards home, glancing up every so often to look at the tall white castle standing in the distance. He really wanted to help the king, but not for the reward. Jerod was considered strange that way, for he would rather help his mother and father instead of getting into trouble all day. Jerod simply liked helping others.
As he approached the small cottage where he lived with his parents, Jerod smiled. He loved his parents, and they loved him, their only child. So how would they take the news that Jerod planned to leave to help the king?

At dinner, both of Jerod’s parents noticed that their son was unusually quiet. His father asked if anything was wrong. Jerod picked at his food for a moment more before telling them about the announcement he heard that day and his desire to help the King. His father and mother looked at each other for a long moment. Finally Jerod’s father cleared his throat and said, “If the Lord so leads you, son, then go.”

The next day, Jerod woke early and started walking along the road that lead to King Leonard’s castle. It was not a long walk, and by early afternoon Jerod was looking up at the tall, spiraling towers and the gleaming white stone of the castle. Walking inside, Jerod was taken to the king’s court. There, Jerod was surprised to see none other than the princess Mary herself. She sat alone in a corner, silently watching everyone with her cloudy blue eyes. Leonard leaned forward as his sharp grey eyes watched the young lad approach. He was a simple looking boy, certainly no older than seventeen years of age, but there was something about the honest look in his blue eyes that told Leonard that this was the boy who would help him with his problem. Jerod came closer and asked the king what his problem was.

“My daughter, as you can see, is right over there. For, lad, it is not Mary herself that it is missing…but her heart. The Dragon Worldly has stolen it from me, and I do not know how to claim it back. If you can help me…” Leonard let his words fade slowly away as he watched Jerod observe Mary more closely. After a long moment, Jerod spoke.

“Your highness, I cannot solve your problem.” The king slumped back into his throne. He had been so certain that this was the boy who could help him. “No, I cannot help the princess. But you,” Jerod turned to face Leonard. “you can. For if a father loses his daughter’s heart then he must go and reclaim it for the glory of the High King!”

And Leonard knew these words to be true. So the next day he found himself traveling with Jerod to reclaim Mary’s heart. Although Leonard now knew that it was his job to obey his calling as a father and fight for Mary’s heart, he wanted Jerod to accompany him.

The Dragon Worldly, who had stolen Mary’s heart, lived deep in the black woods, far to the north. It was said that Worldly was merely an accomplice to the evil lord of darkness, Prince Shyam. Rare was the man who was bold enough to venture close to his tower, claimed the wandering minstrels, but King Leonard just laughed and called the warnings fairy tales. “For surely there is evil in this world, but not as dark and black as the storytellers claim, right?” he chuckled at Jerod over dinner one night. Jerod shook his head silently at himself. His parents had never sugar-coated evilness for him, but many others had grown up thinking that evilness could be taken lightly.

After traveling for a few days, Jerod saw on the horizon a tall, black, spiraling tower rise up. Swallowing the lump in his throat, he pointed it out to Leonard. “Aha!” the king chuckled to himself. “This is almost too easy.”

“Indeed, and it worries me.” Jerod muttered to himself. The words had barely left his lips when a ear piercing screech rent the air. The sun disappeared as a large black cloud covered it. “That is no cloud!” Jerod called out a warning to Leonard as the black ‘cloud’ swooped down with another screech and grabbed at the two men with its long talons. “That is the Dragon Worldly!” Jerod and Leonard drew their swords, and not too soon, for the Dragon was swiftly upon them. “King, run! Save her heart!” Jerod called out. “I can hold the dragon off for you!” Leonard nodded and started running towards the tower.

“That’s it, Leonard. Come to me.” Shyam’s sharp face had a wickedly pleased look on it and his black eyes glittered as he watched Leonard run towards him. “Save her heart.” He mocked the king.

“Shyam, you have stolen my daughter’s heart from me and I demand that you give it back, now!” Leonard snarled. But Shyam merely laughed in his face.

“You don’t deserve it. Think, Leonard, all the times where you were just ‘too busy’ to do something with Mary. She came to you with love, and that love was rejected. You are a failure as a father.” The sword slipped from Leonard’s hand as the words hit him. He knew that as evil as Shyam was, the words he just said were true in a horribly twisted way. There was only one thing that Shyam was mistaken about.

“I might have done Mary wrong in the past, but I am ready to do whatever possible to win her back!” And with these words Leonard picked up his sword once again and charged towards Shyam. At that moment Jerod also appeared in the doorway, his sword drawn and covered in blood.

“Give it up, Shyam! Worldly is dead!” he snarled.

“No!” shrieked Shyam as Leonard swiftly shoved him out of a window. Shyam fell, and was no more.

When Jerod and Leonard returned to the kingdom, there was a great celebration. Leonard raised his hand to get everyone’s attention, and motioned Mary close. Taking from his pocket a small golden locket, Leonard put it around her neck. “I am sorry, Mary. I realize that I have failed you as a father…” Silently, Mary looked up at her father with a smile on her face. Leonard smiled back at her as he turned to Jerod and told him to kneel.

“Jerod, in the name of our Lord I knight you. From now on you shall be Jerod, Slayer of Dragons.”

Jerod looked Leonard in the eyes, smiling, and whispered, “You saved her heart.”

No Greater Love – Agape

Love. When I say that one word what first comes to mind? It totally differs from person to person. To one, it means a little boy pulling his new puppy in a wagon. To another, it is two little girls lying in a backyard wearing tiaras and feather boas, pinkie promising that they will be friends forever. To someone else, it’s a soldier sacrificing his life for his country. And yet to another person, it is an old couple sitting in rocking chairs, holding hands, watching the sunset and remembering the first few days they had together.

To me, love is something different. If I was to define love, I would say this: “Love is that God created you knowing that he would have to send His Son to die and carry the weight of your sin on His shoulders. Love is that Jesus was willing to endure horrific pain and punishment, ultimately leading to death because He knew it was the only way you could live forever. Love is the fact that He would have done it even if you were the only one alive. Love is that He would do it all again. Just because He wants to be with you.”

The sad thing is that not everyone will embrace that love. They’ll shrug it off or ignore it and go searching for something else. And even some who do accept it, do not return it or go looking for something extra because God’s love isn’t “satisfying” enough. What is more satisfying than the knowledge that the Creator of the universe, the Namer of the stars, the Painter of the skies died for and loves you?

Nothing on earth, I’ll tell you that much. And as much as you’d like to deny it, you too know that a love like that is not normal. It’s crazy. It’s beautiful. And it’s impossible to beat.

Charity is a 15-year-old writer who loves to inspire people with her writing. She is the newest writer at KOF, and her column “No Greater Love” will be filled with her thoughts & devotionals. This article was taken from a post she wrote on her blog: SuperGirl In Training. Her dream is to open a house for pregnant teenagers as a place for them to stay when they are rejected by the rest of the world.

Rhymes at Times: Mother Sings

One wish, one beat – stop!-
Like a break in music, your face
Squished up like a wrinkled apple
Within the darkness of a wet embrace
Intertwined, you and I, to shine
More or less, to live
Tell me, do you want to live?
I am considering a stop
A stop of your deep, deep shine
Dark, I hear your cry within, see your face
I must decide between your embrace
And the other, here my golden apple
Choice, choice, I seize the apple
From the serpent’s tree, I live
And gaze to make my fated embrace
This decision, revision, to reverse, stop –
I imagine, little one, your face
I see it like an angel. Shine
On. And on and on, child, shine
I throw to the ground the polished apple
Tears appear on my face
How could I do this thing, how could I live
To stop, to stop
You. I cannot live without your embrace
Live. May heaven fill you, embrace
You with its golden shine
I do not know you, but I will not stop
This love, this life  - not take Eve’s apple
May it wilt and rust, never live
Again. Your precious face
Is holy in the darkness, your face
Is wonderful in the light’s embrace
Live, my child, on and on, you must live
To make with your heart the whole world shine
Polish up your ruddy apple
Offer it up to us, your gift, do not stop
I see the apple on the ground, despising this stop
I embrace you, cause you to live
In your face, I see heaven shine.

God says in his word, “For your formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made [set apart]. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.” (Psalm 139: 13-14, ESV)

Every time God knits together another little baby, he has made a beautiful miracle. When I wrote this poem, I was thinking of the millions of little boys and girls who never get to meet and embrace their mothers. My hope for this poem is that you’ll remember those precious little ones in your prayers, and as their mothers seek to make hard choices, like the woman in this piece, that they will have wisdom and compassion from God to choose life. Jeremiah 1:5 says that God knew us while we were in the womb, and loved us even then. Let’s come alongside these babies and their moms and love them as Jesus would. -Catey

Meet the Contributors: Charity

Interview by Kylie

Charity is our newest writer, and for her debut I thought I’d introduce her by asking her a few questions. I’ve definitely enjoyed getting to know her, and she’s so much fun to be around! Read this interview to see what I mean.

Thanks for joining us, Charity. To start with, could you tell us a little bit about you in a nutshell?

Well, I’m in a word, eccentric. I love to entertain people. Creativity and my personality go hand in hand. I’m kind of obsessed with writing. And Jesus of course.

Speaking of Jesus, could you define what exactly God means to you?
I like to see him as my best friend, but I have to remember that he’s so much more then that too. He’s the God of the universe Who died . . . for me. You can’t get much crazier or more beautiful than that.

If there was one thing you could tell the whole world, what would it be?
That Jesus loves them. And I know it sounds cliche but is there any better truth than that? Not really. And someday I hope to actually get the chance to tell them that.

That’s the greatest message of all. What is something you’d like to pursue when you get older?
Well, there’s a few things. Being on Broadway is on my bucket list, but God recently told me to change my life plan. So now I’m going to be a fiction writer, and with the money from my books I’m going to open a home for pregnant teenage girls to raise their children when they’ve been rejected by the world.
And of course I want to get married and have kids someday too.

If money and time were no issue, what is one thing you would LOVE to do?
Well, I want to travel to all five continents and all fifty states so I’d do that, and I’d take a few friends with me.

Moving into the random here…. what is your least favorite food?
I actually have a story behind that. I was at my grandparents’ 60th wedding anniversary celebration and a waiter came over and asked me if I’d like some of what he had. I asked what it was and he said beef pate` so I took one. I gagged it down then asked my mom what it was. She told me it was liver. And now I hate it.

Last question: What is one thing that you want people to remember about you?
That I’m kind of an overachiever. I love doing things that people tell me I cannot do. Don’t tell me I can’t do something because I will go above and beyond to prove that I can (unless it’s against my morals). And don’t tell me the sky’s the limit when there are footsteps on the moon.

You can read some of Charity’s writings in her new devotional column, No Greater Love.

Shining Stars: Stellar Kart

Like I said in my music article, I’ve been listening to a lot of Stellar Kart music. (I call them Skellar Tart, thanks to a flub I made once, that I’ll never live down). They’ve become one of my favorite Christian bands.
I’ve watched almost ALL of their videos on Youtube (at least twice, if not more), and found they are very funny and prove to be great Christian guys – who love to sing/play for the glory of God.

Meet the Band

Adam Agee is the lead singer of the band – and plays the guitar.
Brian Calcara is the bass guitar player and sings harmony.
Jordan Messer is the drummer.

Adam, Jordan and former band member, Cody Pellerin met when they were in high school – and started playing music together at their youth group/church. (Cody left Stellar Kart to spend more time with his family – and was replaced by Jon Howard, who recently left the band to play guitar with Paramore).

Random Facts

Adam learned guitar from Jordan’s dad.
Jordan got his first drum set when he was 5.
Adam didn’t start singing (seriously), until he was out of high school.
Brian is the only one (of the original members), that isn’t from Phoenix, Arizona, but instead, Iowa.

After watching many videos and reading many articles about these great guys – I found some awesome quotes to share with you.

“I hope that us playing music and us writing songs, can somehow change some people’s lives, especially youth.” ~ Adam Agee

“The reason He (God) gives us His word, is as an instruction manual, to know how we’re supposed to live, and delight in what He gives us, because it gives us direction.” ~Brian Calcara

“I think the Bible can help them (youth) with peace and knowing that God is always there for them and that even when life doesn’t make any sense, and when things happen that we can’t control, to know that God has a plan.” ~ Adam Agee

“I know how awesome is it to be a CHRISTIAN, and to have a FATHER holding my hand.” ~ Jordan Messer

“We want anyone who hears our music to get a positive message, and hopefully learn a little more about God.” ~ Adam Agee

If you would like to learn more about Stellar Kart check out their website  (which, by the way was designed by the drummer, Jordan):
